1、 Material Selection of Silage Film

Polyethylene (PE):

Advantages: PE material has good chemical stability, low temperature resistance, and water resistance, while relatively low cost, making it one of the main materials for silage film.

Application: Black and white film is a commonly used PE film in silage, which adopts three-layer co extrusion technology for better air tightness and stretchability. Black and white color design, white reflects external solar heat energy, black blocks light, and prevents UV damage to the activity of lactic acid bacteria in silage.

Polypropylene (PP):

Characteristics: PP material has high heat resistance, mechanical strength, and chemical corrosion resistance, but its cost may be slightly higher compared to PE material.

Application: Under certain specific conditions, such as when higher heat resistance is required, silage film made of PP material may be chosen.

In addition, there are special materials such as oxygen barrier films. By adding an oxygen barrier layer (such as ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer EVOH, polyvinylidene chloride PVDC, nylon material PA, etc.) to the PE film, the oxygen permeability of the film can be significantly reduced, and the shelf life of silage can be extended.

2、 Thickness Selection of Silage Film

The thickness selection of silage film  should be comprehensively considered based on factors such as the variety of stored grains and forage, environmental temperature, humidity, and storage time.

General principle:

The thicker the plastic film, the better its moisture resistance and tensile properties are usually. Therefore, when choosing silage film, it should be ensured that the thickness of the film is sufficient to withstand various stresses during storage.

It is generally recommended to use materials with a thickness of 0.05mm or more, but the specific thickness needs to be adjusted according to the actual situation.

Specific thickness:

Ordinary transparent film: A thickness of 5-8 silk (i.e. 0.05-0.08mm) is sufficient for silage to meet basic needs.

Black and white film: The commonly used thickness is 12 threads (i.e. 0.12mm). This thickness of black and white film provides good sealing performance while also having a certain tensile strength.
